Holly Near

From the Unitarian Society’s Newsletter about his event.

Holly Near does not need to re-invent herself after forty years of singing for peace.  She just keeps getting better. Her voice is strong, her wit is sharp, her musicality is entertaining and her commitment to peace is deep and consistent.

Here’s a song that we hope someone will pass on to the folks at True Colors or anyone else who wishes to play footsies with the CIA Listen up.

I’m Not Afraid.  Holly Near and emma’s revolution.

“Occupy The USA”, Emma’s Revolution

The Unitarian Society of Hartford is proud to host Holly Near on October 5th, as she sings songs from her new CD Peace Becomes You as well as old favorites.  The New York Times says, “Miss Near…. belongs to the folk tradition of Woody Guthrie and the Weavers.”  Holly has been a pioneer for women in music, starting her own independent record company back in 1972.  For decades, Near has put her gentle wit, big loving spirit and powerful songwriting to work for peace in the world.  She can entertain like a cabaret singer and challenge the mind like a philosophy professor.  One fan said, “Holly Near is a divine combination of Judy Garland and Pete Seeger.”  A great combo!

Emma’s Revolution

Pat and Sandy are partners in life, love & justice. In the spirit of Emma Goldman’s famous attribution, “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution,” emma’s revolution brings their uprising of truth, hope and a dash of healthy irreverence to concerts and peace & justice, environmental, LGBT & women’s rights, immigration & human rights, and labor events around the world. Based in the Washington DC area, emma’s revolution has performed at more than a thousand events throughout the US and abroad. Join the revolution!

From Holly Near’s site we learn this.

As Holly Near celebrates her first album in three years, Peace Becomes You, she’s building on 40 creative years and 30 recordings. Respected around the world for her music and activism, her joy and passion inspire people to join in her celebration of the human spirit. Equally compelling at her shows or through your speakers, her music fully engages listeners in the world around them. Holly has made a career speaking to anyone in the world who believes in peace, justice, and feminism, a wonderful spectrum of humanity. (more…)

No brainer this week. The House Republicans who voted against food stamps.

In from the Progress Report.

House Republicans Vote to Slash Food Stamps

Yesterday, in a party line vote, 217 House Republicans voted to cut $40 billion from the food stamps program. The vote represents the latest example of the party’s increasingly out of touch, immoral, and economically backward positions that favor the rich at the expense of the poor and the middle class.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that Thursday’s cuts will bump 3.8 million off the program next year, with an additional 2.8 million losing them each year on average over the next decade. Additionally, an estimated 210,000 children will lose access to free school lunch programs and 55,000 jobs will be lost in the first year of cuts alone.

For more on how food stamps benefit Americans, check out this Center for American Progress and Half in Ten infographic:

You know how big of jerks these folks are. You know how they always bible thump. Well the Progress Report has these quotes, quotes that the House Republicans should be very aware of. Quotes that if true could land them in a heck of a lot of HOT water.

  • Proverbs 14:31 – “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”
  • Proverbs 22:16 – “He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich – both come to poverty.”
  • Proverbs 29:7 – “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.”

It not so much to take the time to read a book that has been banned but to fight hard so no one will ever ban, burn or destroy any books anywhere.
