Chapter Three Some of my old ways are my new ways again.

Pills pouring from a medication bottle

A few years back in the city where I live now, I put my faith in a doctor of western medicine. I had a very bad sinus infection. I couldn’t breathe and found myself waking up at 2 or 3 o’clock each morning and having to go out side and sit. I needed air all around me. Now out side sitting is not something that most people would be fond of doing especially in the winter time. But I had to do it. Bundled up with a blanket to put around me and a small folding chair to sit on out I went and sat way out in the back of my apartment building where there is a small park. One can learn many things out in the dark like that. One of the neatest things that I able to see was the shifting blackness of the night. If you have never seen it I suggest you go out find a dark spot and sit. Watch, how the dark moves around. ( 1 ) I changed my areas of sitting as the weather changed and sometime went to sit way over in the corner of the shopping plaza. The plaza has a large over hang and was a great place to sit when it rained. Most of the time I hid out playing I spy you, you don’t see me and tried to take a good snooze.

Now this doctor just kept filling me up with antibiotics and then with antihistamines. Heavens knows what else. When one didn’t work he would say, “oh that isn’t working let’s try something else.” One day I caught him in his trick. He recommend a tablet that was a med that I had already tried and that I had gotten a bad reaction from and no healing at all. He should of known this as most of the office visit he spent on his lap top pecking away like some ding-bat. I called him on the carpet about it, left his office and never went back. He was a jerk who damned near killed me. Too think that many of my people (LGBT) swoon over this doctor makes me ill. He’s a quack. I try not to think about him and his response to my medical condition as I do not want my mind to continue to be poisoned by him. I would love to get him back but know that it is only a matter of time before some one will sue his ass off. Other older gay men have complained of the same treatment by him. Guess he is into young and butch and that is where his heart of his medical heart lies. A million dollar gay of the worse kind. The type that drips of the system, that plays cozy with our opponents. We know them as the Gay INC. The one issue folks the ones who only think of themselves to hell with everyone else. The ones who don’t give a crap about any issue but their own.  (No Mary, us LGBT-Q folks are not one big happy family)

Plantain

I don’t know how I made it through that winter but can remember the Monday morning that I got up and said I will not do this anymore. I will not take anymore of this quacks poison.  I stopped then and there and began to consult the web sites to learn all I could about healing herbs for sinus congestion. I learned that a combination of Yarrow, Plantain, Elderberry Flowers, and Nettle with a squirt of eye bright made an excellent tea for the sinus from herbalist Claudia Wingo. I went to an Herbal Store and found what I needed and began drinking the tea right away. I also began taking golden seal daily.  When the sinus infection began to threaten my ears I used mullein and garlic oil. I found that soon I didn’t have to go outside to sit that I could sit up in my chair bundled up with the window cracked slightly. A bit down the road I noticed that the hundred pound weights that I felt were on my head began to lift. (2 )

Yarrow

I began to feel real again. Each morning before I stirred too far from my bed I would drink 2 cups of lemongrass tea. I also discovered talking to others that there was a grape fruit nasal spray that one could use for any congestion in the nasal passage. It works wonders. I studied and I studied and I studied some more. I walked everywhere. A few years later I feel fine, can sleep on both my right and left side with out the problem of congestion. My only trouble comes from the laundry aisle, from cheap perfume and Cologne (the real flower kind doesn’t even bother me,) from vehicle exhaust( I hate cars) and from some cleaning fluids. As soon as I feel anything in the nasal area coming on I mix up my tea and drink away.

Stinging Nettles

Do I feel 100% perfect. No, not at all. Do I have things wrong with me, of course.  Nearing 70 after a life of drugs, alcohol, always being poor and not taking care of myself the way that I should has taken its toll. And given what western doctors have added to my complaints it is a wonder that I can still do what I do. One of the worse things I ever did was allow that fool doctor to prescribe antibiotics the way he did and then add antihistamine’s and decongestants on top of it over and over. But I was so sick I just gave in. I believe that was the cause of the medical problems that I have today. Of course no doctor will owe up to it and say yes that maybe is where your problem came from now lets start to fix it. they’re thick as a den of thieves.

Elderflower

One of the things that troubles me is very few Naturopathic doctors take my health insurance and being in the low income bracket I simply can not afford their fees upfront. I suppose according to them only people whose insurance will cover the consultations or can pay upfront are people that they want as patients.( as if that was what folk medicine was all about back in the day when real healers took care of the people). Freddie’s grandmother Dora would go out and help to heal anyone regardless if they gave her a egg, $2.00, or what ever else. Many times this wise woman worked for free. Dottie Daniels grandmother the same way. Folks out in the Daley Road section of the town and down through the back woods depended on Grandma and her healing herbs. “By god,” said Dottie once in an interview, “she even went out of her way to cure folks she didn’t even care for. Just think curing folks she didn’t like or care for well isn’t that what the good lord told us to do. Love our enemies, bless those who persecute you.” Now Grandma Daley didn’t need any church to tell her that. She just walk in the good and spread that good all around.” Of course we will never get anywhere near that state until Capitalism and all of those who support it are destroyed. Yes as Dorthy Day said, this is indeed a filthy rotten system right down to the care of the sick never mind cutting off access to food and housing. ( 3  )

So is this natural healing of today for the wealthy only, for the middle class, for the new age hipsters or those who can afford their fees? Is this what it has all come to from back in the day when Susan and I worked the woods and meadows and gave out to those in need by what they could afford or if they couldn’t you bet as quick as a lick she would be there at their side working with her herbs to cure the sick.  I guess that is why most of these natural doctors have offices out of the city, in places where the middle and upper classes live. I wonder sometimes if it isn’t just a big money maker as they always have something to sell you they are really no better than the medical establishment. (4)

But you know, I am going to do it? Will I take the time, using the knowledge of the old ways and clear myself up? You bet. A few years back I kicked a 3 pack a day smoking habit with teas, diet and sheer will power. So this too just may be possible even if western medical doctors say that it isn’t, I know some thinkers who say that it is.

Notes:

( 1 ) Artist Sylvia Pimack Mangold captured this shifting night in her nocturnal paintings. Check them out as they are amazing works.

(2) Claudia Wingo has this to say about herbs to add to a blend for tea. “Herbs are an important line of defense. I use several herbs that are specific for upper respiratory catarrh. These include Nettles, Eyebright, Elder Flowers, Golden Rod, Ground Ivy and Plantain. You needn’t use them all, just pick two or three along with Nettles (it’s a specific to put into your blend. I then add a respiratory support herb such as Yarrow, Mullein or Elecampane.”

( 3  ) “Dorthy Day quote: Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system.”

(4) At my job now my medical insurance went up to $86.00 dollars a week for one person. Now I don’t know about any of the white middle class or those who work for corporate amerikkka but that is a tab bit high for a low income worker.  So what did I do as I just couldn’t afford to have or not have the insurance. Add a big hip hip hooray for 32 BJ our local Services Employees union. After years of fighting the bosses members of the union won the right (yes that is how I am going to say it should be for everyone) to free insurance. My partner of 38 years is a member and he put me on his insurance.

So now if and when I do need a doctor or tests done I can go without any worries.  I try hard to stay clear of them though, doctors like politicians are not my favorite kind of people. I shake my head and wonder how do some of the people who have to pay for insurance do it? As we well know the rates go up if you have a spouse or children. But still when one talks union to some of these workers “Oh, No, no, no, no! we’ll have none of that. You have to pay dues and they protect the lazy workers and they this and they that.” My only reply can be, so stay in your shit until the bastards swallow you, take all of your hard earned money and send you packing up, fool that you are.

Do we really need to say it? Who cares we are going to say it anyway.

Obama has asked for a massive increase in federal defense spending. For this year, the president requested and received $500 billion for the Pentagon. For 2016, that number has ballooned to $561 billion—that’s $38 billion over the sequestration cap. Just think what that could do if put to good use rather than the act of killing. A few other thoughts:

I know a person who has worked in his job for 35 years. After all these years he is only making $16.00 per hour. We question this $15.00 an hour movement. We suppose we all have to start somewhere on this road of reforming. Let’s see, $16.00 per hour would give a person, if she was working 40 hrs. a week $640.00 before taxes, Social Security, Medical Insurance. One would end up with about $528.00 or $1,012 a month. Probably too much to qualify for any benefits. Let those of us who know better and stand in support of the workers call for $20.00 per hour, fight hard and beat the bosses and the rich man at their game. But you know the man has got us. He’s got so many people unemployed right now that thousands are waiting in the wings to get the job. Nothing short of Socialist revolution will do.

Having a roof over ones head is paramount to ones good health. Read about these nasty folks out in California. This has been going on for far too long. Low Income Families face eviction as building rebrands for facebook workers. The new landlords have refused to offer any financial assistance for relocation or additional time to secure new housing. Tell me again how much you love this filthy rotten system.

How about this from the National Priories Project the cost of what is considered national security and the wars that the U.S. has been involved in. Of interest is the section what else these dollars could buy. Go to Here

$12,548,710.60 The cost, per drone, of 10 MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft the Air Force announced Monday that it is buying. Drones are a lot of things, but cheap ain’t necessarily one of them.
