Progressive people from all over the country will be descending on Washington, D.C. on January 20, 2017 to stage a massive demonstration along Pennsylvania Avenue on Inauguration Day.

How one votes on election day is important, but even more important is whether we succeed in building a mass movement that can truly change the country, and the world. That is what we will do, regardless of who is elected.

Whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump assumes the presidency it is critically important that we keep building an ever larger grassroots movement against war, militarism, racism, anti-immigrant scapegoating and neoliberal capitalism’s assault against workers’ living standards and the environment.

Real social change comes from the bottom, the mobilized grassroots, and not from the centers of institutional power, the professional politicians or the capitalist elites.

Millions of people feel entirely disenfranchised by a political system that has delivered the least favorable and trusted candidates in U.S. history. Many hoped that the Bernie Sanders campaign would represent a new direction and opportunity to take on entrenched power and extreme inequality. That campaign was largely suppressed, but its end does not change the desires and aspirations of tens of millions of people, workers and youth in particular, who are demanding real change. On Inauguration Day, thousands will be in the streets regardless of who is elected —  to give voice to the millions of people in this country who are demanding systemic change.

Donald Trump is a racist, sexist bigot. Wherever he has gone around the country, his campaign has been met with large-scale protests. Should he be elected we believe that tens of thousands of progressive people will be in the streets on Inauguration Day and in the weeks and months afterward.

We also know that because Trump is so vile, and his rhetoric so dangerous, that millions of progressive people may end up voting for Hillary Clinton even if they oppose her record and her policies: her support for the Iraq invasion; her insistence on the NATO bombing of Libya; her commitment to dramatically widen the U.S. intervention in the war in Syria; her support for expanding the criminal U.S. drone program; her support for the policies that doubled the rate of mass incarceration that disportionately affected Black, Latino and poor communities; her support for Bill Clinton’s devastating attack on social welfare programs; her non-stop bidding for Wall Street banks; and her support for the current policies of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. If Clinton were to be elected, it will be necessary to take the streets, and stay in the streets, to push back against such reactionary policies.

Many people are voting for third-party candidates and a huge part of the population will not be voting at all.

All of us organizing together can expand the already existing grassroots movements for social change and a real political revolution. Waiting for politicians to do the “right thing” would only serve as a guarantee that there will be more wars, inequality, racism, and oppression.

Join us on January 20, 2017 for a massive mobilization of the people — RSVP at the form at the bottom of this page.
