In memoriam Gilbert Baker (1951–2017): Artist, designer and lifelong activist for LGBTQ equality. Gilbert created the rainbow flag for the 1978 Gay Freedom Day celebration in San Francisco. The flag is now an internationally recognized symbol of LGBTQ pride.
A native of Kansas, Gilbert lived in San Francisco from 1970 to 1994, contributing his distinctive designs for countless events. In 1994, he moved to New York City, where he spent the rest of his life. He remained active as an artist, with his work commemorating gay victims of the Nazi regime recently displayed in San Francisco.
Gilbert’s longtime friend Cleve Jones reported his death this afternoon. We have lost one of the greats of our community. Let us now lower rainbow flags worldwide to half mast in Gilbert’s memory.( Don Spradlin)

“I am heartbroken. My dearest friend in the world is gone. Gilbert gave the world the Rainbow Flag; he gave me forty years of love and friendship. I can’t stop crying. I love you forever Gilbert Baker.”- David V Moore

You can bet your ass or mine if you want they are. Here is some chilling news. We oppose this. One can hardly trust a cop with a gun what the hell will they do with a weaponized drone? Are they getting ready for the big one? Are they expecting revolution in our streets?

From NBC news

Connecticut lawmakers are considering whether the state should become the first in the country to allow police to use drones outfitted with deadly weapons. The proposal was immediately met with concern by civil rights and liberties advocates.

The state legislature’s Judiciary Committee approved the bill Wednesday and sent it to the House of Representatives.

It would ban the use of weaponized drones but exempt police. The state Police Officer Standards and Training Council would have to approve new rules and train officers before they could use weaponized drones.

North Dakota is the only state that allows police to use weaponized drones, but limits the use to “less lethal” weapons such as stun guns.

Connecticut NAACP President Scot Esdaile opposes the bill and said he worries police will misuse drones.

This was posted over at the Call Out to the Trans rally sponsored by GLSEN that is being held this Saturday. The comment was written by John Keogh.
John Keogh

“I attended the rally on 28 March in New Haven. It was meaningful, and most of the speakers were wonderful. However, one speaker was hatefully strident, calling the administration pigs and making insulting comments about the police. Another speaker was similarly vehement, but more sophisticated. We also had a couple of guys from Antifascist Action–the people who turned the Berkeley protests from a definite win to a definite loss, costing us an awful lot of support across the nation. They smoked, in a crowd, along with some woman near the mike. Who does that? How completely thoughtless of people with asthma, other reactivity to the smoke, or just ex-addicts like me.

Listen. I am in the Resistance with a whole heart. But I will NOT be a part of anybody’s fantasy revolution. Anyone who comes on as if it is Russia in 1919 can just do his or her ego trip in private. If you are arranging something like that in Hartford, let us know, so we can boycott this demonstration. Seriously, I am 100% behind trans youth, with all my heart. But I will not insult police or be part of some fist-in-the-air, brain-in-the-sand revolution.

Get it straight now, because we are in this for the long haul.”

A response: Removed by GLSEN. No room for discussion. Teacher knows best.

Oh thank you I am so glad that this is not the revolution of 1919 in Russia even if the current regime has declared war on us and slowly will be taking away our rights one by one until they get to whatever the Christian Taliban has in store for us. I am so happy I don’t have to worry about losing any blood on the steps of the Supreme Court or anywhere else for that matter. It sound awful that people were smoking and smelly. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke or any kind for that matter. I am ashamed that I use to smoke wherever I wanted to regardless of who was near me. PU. Car exhaust really bothers me to know end so I don’t drive a car. The groups that have long been active and that are listed as speakers and supporters all seem like fine democrats to me, all law-abiding citizens with love in their hearts so no worry there. It sounds like a very enjoyable day while we do our thing for our people with our rainbow flags and love, respect and unity of all. Don’t forget to bring your Trans flag.

I am not sure having just joined the resistance last week if change doesn’t come about by all different ways and means. I read somewhere maybe in school that there were a lot of nice homosexual groups back in the 50tis and 60ties and then the young said, to heck with this police harassment and Stonewall happened over those nights in June to me seemed like a break this and that rebellion. My goodness they even threw coins at the police instead of giving them to homeless folks. A friend of ours Stormie DeLarverie a butch drag king said of that first night, “The cop hit me so I hit him back.”  These were the kind of folks who kicked in the door so the many could walk through or so I have been told. When I heard that a little old lady lived upstairs of Stonewall all I could say is, thank the LGBT communities lucky stars she didn’t burn to death. I am not sure and will have to check out more of this history stuff to make sure that people who were and are under attack meet your standards of respectability. You know Mr. Keogh you can thank whatever you thank, that you are not black and trans living on the street. If you were I wonder how much you would love and respect the police how much after being harassed for the umpteenth time how many times you were almost killed before you would lose this attitude?

One thing a big thank you to the groups who are sponsoring this peaceful rally for all of us folks who do not care about fists in the air, leaving our blood behind, smoking at the mic or in the crowd, insulting comments about the police who are always so nice and helpful to old folks who are trying to cross the street or any talk of revolution as that is going just a little bit too far….end of comment.

End of comment. (we thought we went far enough on a respectable pawns of the democrats page.)

Here is what we really will say to the likes of Mr. Keogh and fellow Travelers who are nothing more than pawns in the game of democrat and republicans, who hold back any real advancement and who must be swept away into the dust bins of history. Oh by the way, Mr. Keogh has been nominated for the jerk of the week. Amen to that sister.

Dear Mr. Keogh

Sir, please get your liberal ass out of the way. You are nothing more than a tool of the ruling class, holding everything back and expecting that everyone wants to fight the same old battles over and over again. That does nothing but re-invent the wheel which always ends up missing a few spokes. We need change and we will not get it with or from you. You said “We are in this for the long haul,” yes sir some of us have been fighting since the mid-sixties and you know its your brand of over and over that makes us very weary. It is your brand of back and forth, liberal, than right, right than liberal over and over that will lead us to the path of the first revolution. Maybe a lot of us will die in it but then just maybe you guys will see that it is the only way to go. Or you will act like so many before become a Kapo and turn us all in just because you don’t like our “fantasy revolution.”  Let’s get real here Mr. Keogh. We also would like to add that while you sit home on your liberal ass, the anti-fascist folks in New Haven have been working around the clock building large banners, and planing a response to the Hate Bus that is coming to town. Do you know what the Hate Bus is? Who Citizen Go or NOM is? Who  are these hateful people and what are they saying about Transgender folks? That was the anti-fascist group with the large blue banner speaking about breathing as revolution. Do you know that some of the speakers at trans rally in New Have have been for many years responding to the widespread epidemic of violence against Trans people on a daily basis. There are many reasons we act as we do.

Here is one from my revolution.

Image result for what would madame defarge knit

A fantasy revolution? You make us laugh. The revolution is very real. Don’t try to hold us back or the promise from history run all over you and your kind. When push comes to shove, when the present regime lights their Reichstag’s fire and they begin to crack down, which side will you be on? I bet the wrong side of the barricades. You know I told a little lie in my response to your comment. I have been a revolutionary activist for some 54+ years, have met and seen your type in action, and have to say ENOUGH OF YOU!!! You, your thinking are the cause we are still fighting these same old battles over and over again. Hopefully holding us back this time will not be and option that many will take. You are nothing more than tools of the ruling class. Your comments feed into the split, divide and conquer that is being employed across the country. Mr. Keogh you do not lead the band, get out of yourself. No matter what that train is coming down the track and you are not going to stop it. Its been a long time coming and many of us will make damn sure that it pulls into the station. What will be this generations Stonewall? None of us know. Already shots have been fired at our community and more shots are certain to come. A love fest on a Saturday afternoon isn’t going to make it stop, maybe it will make you feel better, or maybe polite society will like you a bit more. Maybe you’ll get on the news and your 5 mins of fame and photos of the day will be all that is accomplished. But you know as Harry Hay once said, When push comes to shove you will find out real fast  that in their eyes you are degenerate and they are not. You will find out real fast that they law you helped to get on the books is no longer there. Here today gone tomorrow. So light your candles in the rain, pray for equality for all, cheer on the speakers as a great philosopher who once wrote on these pages said, “Each one as they may. By any means necessary.” Remember one thing, the powers that be only gave us our rights because we rioted.

Comments from the page before the removal.
Comment from GLSEN:  John, this is a youth-led and -centered event. Some of the speakers are from allied LGBTQ+ organizations, but most of them are trans youth and friends, parents, or allies of trans youth. There will not only be speeches but some poetry slams and creative performances, chants, and other important gestures of solidarity. While your concerns are understandable, this rally is about respect, affirmation, and unity, not hostility, disrespect, and division.
Comment from #2 Hi John, as an asthmatic, I do share the concern about smoking in the crowd. That’s probably most effective to address on an individual basis, though. I suspect most folks would be understanding if someone near them asks that they move to the edge of the gathering to smoke.

Comment from #2

And while it’s everyone’s choice to decide what kind of expression they’re comfortable being around, I think it’s also important that we respect the very justifiable anger of trans people who have been mistreated by social institutions like police.
Comment from us.  I agree 100 % with Comment #2. The trans community must take the lead in this and I will support them as always by any means necessary by all means possible. I can’t understand why some folks just don’t check out the facts surrounding the police and how they treat the Trans community and other communities. Must live under a rock.
I checked out the GLSEN site and noticed that the posting by Mr. Keog and our comments were removed.
NOTES:
Our brooms are ready!

We have always loved this: The Russian Revolution sent a thrill of joy through the hearts of hundreds of millions of the exploited and oppressed all over the world. Its influence was decisive in the profound wave of revolution which swept eastern and central Europe upon the end of the war. Kings and emperors toppled as this revolutionary upsurge went through Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Balkans. The whole of European capitalism was shaken to its foundations.

If the peoples of the world were inspired by the Russian Revolution, the capitalists of all countries were profoundly shocked by it. In their fright they trembled at the threatened destruction of their whole system of exploitation and robbery.

Trump Administration Attacks LGBT Community On Three Fronts Over Last 24 Hours

by Dan Savage Mar 29, 2017

There are, unbelievably, some “Gays for Trump” out there. I would ask one of them to comment on what the Trump administration has been up to over the last 24 hours… but homosexuals for homophobes didn’t have anything coherent to say the day before yesterday and I can’t imagine they have anything coherent to say this morning. Anyway, in the last 24 hours…

Expectations that the 2020 census might start including LGBTQ subjects were raised and then quickly dashed on Tuesday after the U.S. Census admitted that it had “inadvertently” included “sexual orientation” and “gender identity,” in a long-awaited report outlining new categories for the survey. In response, GLAAD’s CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, branded the move as a “systematic effort on behalf of the Trump administration to erase LGBT people.” Last year, various federal agencies urged the Census Bureau to include sexual orientation and gender in their data as it was crucial to their role in enforcing the law. The survey, which has been conducted every ten years since 1790, includes a wide range of questions designed to gather data on everything from languages spoken to household plumbing facilities.

An executive order President Trump signed Monday has gutted the LGBT protections President Obama implemented for employees of federal contractors — as well as many other protections those workers enjoyed. Trump rescinded the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order, also known as Executive Order 13673, that President Obama issued in 2014. That order required companies wishing to contract with the federal government to show that they’ve complied with various federal laws and other executive orders. Notably, Obama issued that order in tandem with Executive Order 13672, which prohibited contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. This means that there is no way to enforce the LGBT protections granted in 13672..

President Donald Trump’s administration has proposed cutting $1.23 billion this fiscal year from research funded by the National Institutes of Health, according to a White House document sent to congressional appropriators…. A worldwide initiative to help people with HIV and AIDS, known as PEPFAR and heavily focused on patient treatment in Africa, would be slashed by almost $300 million under the plan. The savings would be found by slowing the rate of new patients put on treatment and reducing support to “low-performing countries.” States also would face a $50 million cut that would target “less effective HIV research and prevention activities.”

We got to have peace, Curtis Mayfield.

We got to have peace
To keep the world alive
And war to cease

We got to have joy
True in our hearts
With strength we can’t destroy

People hear us
Through our voice the world knows
There’s no choice

for the full lyrics go to HERE.

Still we cry out, we got to have peace. This song is from 1971 and needs to be played and sung over and over again in these dreadful times. We got to have peace. We’re begging to save the children The little ones, Who just don’t understand, we got to have peace.  We may sound old fashion here but we don’t care. We may look like back in the day but that’s too bad. When we look at the pictures of war torn areas of the world we know one thing. We got to have peace. When we look at the terror on the children, mothers and fathers faces we know that war is wrong. We are not ashamed to say it and we will say it again and again. We are not ashamed to show it and we will show it again and again. We know no matter what war is wrong and it will be always wrong no matter what anyone says and no matter what anyone uses as an excuse for it.

Who Killed Iris Canada?

Posted: March 28, 2017 in In Remembrance

Many thanks to 48 Hills for this article.

Iris Canada dies a month after her eviction

At 100 years old, she did not survive long after the loss of the place she called home for 60 years

By Sana Saleem

March 27, 2017

Canada was a resident of Page St. since the 1940s (accounts vary) and secured a life-time lease at $700 a month in 2005 after the building was bought by Peter Owens, Stephen Owens and Carolyn Radisch.
Your actions matter! Donate $10 to support MEDA SF – who provide affordable housing in San Francisco

The Owens want to convert the six-story tenancy-in-common to condominiums, which requires consent from all building residents. Canada, through her attorney, refused to sign conversion papers arguing that it would result in Canada losing her life-time lease. The disagreement sparked an ugly legal battle mobilizing housing rights activists in San Francisco.

Owens argued that Canada no longer lived at her apartment and that it was in shoddy condition. Canada spent a lot of time with her niece or at the hospital, and the Owens family argued that meant Page Street was not her primary residence. Canada’s niece insisted that she be given an opportunity to buy the property, an offer the Owens felt was implausible. Canada’s attorney also didn’t accept reassurances from the Owens that they’d be willing to let her have a fulltime caretaker or meet other times if she came on board with the condominium conversion.

The court ruled in favor of Owens.

Canada’s story highlights the complexities of the housing crisis plaguing San Francisco. Housing activists argued that Canada not be evicted from her residence at her age while opponents argued she wasn’t living at her residence in the first place.

Canada appeared in a wheel chair at a few press conferences but mostly stayed at home or in the hospital owing to her age and ill health. Family and activists warned about the toll the legal battle was taking on her. Despite court orders, Sheriff Vicki Hennessy at first decided to hold off formalizing the eviction given Canada’s health — but on February 10th locks to her apartment were changed.

While accusations hurled from either side, Canada’s health deteriorated and fears of housing activists came true over the weekend: “This is what we said, this what we kept saying again and again but no one listened. We said she will die if she’s evicted that she won’t be able to overcome this shock. We’ve seen it time and time again,” Tommi Aviolli Mecca of the Housing Rights Committee told 48 Hills.

Mecca has been on the forefront of Canada’s fight: “We are San Francisco we are suppose to be compassionate and humane but this is what we did to a senior in our city. She could have been my own grandmother.”

Housing rights activists and community members have organized a vigil to remember Canada at her former residence 670 Page Street on Wednesday. Mecca says they want to give people a place to remember her: “We wanted to give people some time to grieve so we can all come together and remember her.”

Hopefully people will get out in the streets for PEACE. U.S. OUT OF SYRIA/IRAQ NOW!! Everyone has been so preoccupied with what the bad guys are doing to them that many have forgotten what Amerikkka’s beating stick has been doing around the world. Our cries about ACA and other amerikkkan issues are minor to what the regime and former regimes are doing. We are nothing more than cry babies compared to what the family in the above photo is living. They are living what we are allowing this regime to do.

War is not healthy for children and other living things, let’s remember that slogan and go forward putting peace and the end of war on the front burner of our agenda once again.

We must get in the streets and demand an end to this U.S. aggression on the people of Iraq and Syria. We at this site do not support war no matter what any of the powers that be are telling us it is good for. The only thing it is good for is nothing. There is no two ways about it, either one is for their slaughter fest or one is against it. We stand against it. We must be ready to stand against any future wars on North Korea, China, Iran or anywhere else that amerikkka wishes to use its beating stick. NO WAR!!

New Haven AntiFascists   POSTED TODAY 3/28 WITH THIS UPDATE.

*******************POSTED TODAY 3/20/17: Be at the green (Church St and Chapel St) 4:30 to 5:30 on Friday.******************

Looks like they’ve got their new route planned. Get ready to shut down the hate speech bus this Friday! Please share widely!
No automatic alt text available.

The bigots are on a tour with this bus. All we can say is bullshit. To read more about this bus see: This bus is on a road trip to convince you Transgender People are not real.

A bigoted group called Citizen Go is coming to New Haven on Saturday and possibly into Sunday, in a bus covered in transphobic messages. Let’s shut this garbage down.
Time and location TBA, we will update any information ASAP.
We can not allow transphobic propaganda and representation in our city.
Looking for LGBTQ orgs to sign on or speak.
Glitter and “dancing” shoes encouraged.

March 24 – March 26
Mar 24 at 9 PM to Mar 26 at 9 AM
Yale University, New Haven
As more info becomes available as to day and time we will update.

Update:

This bus originated in Spain, funded by a small group of ultra-catholic transphobic and homophobic rich people. Hazte Oir, the Spanish version of the organization, are widely seen as a joke in that country.

A court in Madrid banned the HazteOir bus from the city until it changes its transphobic message, basically calling it a hate crime: “The Office of the Prosecutor argued in its brief that the campaign of the group was ‘an incitement to hatred and discrimination against people who exercise their sexual identity in a different way than those of who identify as heterosexual,’ according to what is stated in article 510.6 of the Penal Code.”

The Navarra Parliament passed a resolution saying they will do anything they can to stop the bus from coming to their territory: “The approved declaration, submitted by UPN, Geroa Bai, EH Bildu, Podemos, PSN and I-EE, also asks the provincial government to take appropriate measures to ‘try to prevent its arrival and the realization of this campaign in our territory, given that it goes against respect for diversity, and in particular sexual diversity and respect for the transgender community.’”

Fuck yeah Spain. Let’s shut this down, New Haven style. Bring your glitter, bring your music, bring your drums and trumpets, bring your dancing shoes. We’re gonna laugh and dance these transphobic bigots out of town.

Update: Bus with anti-transgender message is vandalized in NYC. GOOD!!! Go to HERE.

It may push the arrival of the bus forward a day to Sunday. Keep checking on the New Haven Anti=Fascist page for updates.

Here is a good article HERE.

UPDATE:

Based on the information we received, they will in fact be in Rhode Island sat. Sunday they will be in new haven. If this is misinformation the likelihood of them arriving at a reasonable time Saturday is slim, due to some unexpected delays. We will plan for Sunday, and if they do show up Saturday we encourage autonomous disruptions to greet them.

Check back to the New Haven Anti-fascists group for more details.
