For now the Democrats are on the immigrants side. What happens if one of them becomes boss? What happened under Obama?

Posted: April 30, 2017 in for your reflection, Queer Thoughts, Take Action, The Ruling Class Must Be Brought Down!

We went to the Immigrant Rights Rally yesterday in Hartford. We have long been supporters of immigrants. When Obama was deporting, and given the title of Deporter in Chief we stood up and out and demanded an end to his policies. Our comrade Jennicet Gutierrez of Familia Trans Queer Movement spoke out during a White House PRIDE celebration against the deportation of immigrants and the detaining of Trans women in ICE facilities. Ms. Gutierrez was escorted out to cheers from the crowd of Lesbians and Gays. We stood with Jennicet and will continue to stand with her and our other comrades who speak the truth.

The important thing to remember about this action is Ms. Gutierrez was not afraid to speak out and the most important idea is she was not afraid to speak up even to a democrat president in the White House. She knew while elite members of the LGBT community were fawning all over the Deporter in Chief that there was a real problem, a problem that would not be solved by pretending that the problem did not exist and that everything was okay.

We thought of Ms. Gutierrez and many other trans people who not only fight daily for their lives but who at anytime may be rounded up, detained and deported by ICE. Familia Trans Queer Liberation Movement has this to say, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement (Familia: TQLM) is the only national organization that addresses, organizes, educates, and advocates for the issues most important to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) and Latino communities. Familia: TQLM is inclusive and serves of all LGBTQ Latinos, Latinas, and gender nonconforming individuals. We also collaborate with non-LGBTQ families and friends who support our vision of a united LGBTQ Latino and Latina community. They stand up and speak out when any injustice comes their way.

We thought of Ms. Gutierrez and the many others when the politicians from the democrat party began queuing up at the mic. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., U.S. Rep. John Larson, D-1, and state Comptroller Kevin Lembo were among the attendees and speakers of Saturday’s rally. Organized primarily by property service labor union 32BJ SEIU, the rally was part of a nationwide “Here To Stay.” A union that is and has been for the longest time in the pocket of the democrats. We are not saying here that they do not do good, of course they do and we support them with dues paid by our family. But we want to be honest here. We want folks to think about opposing the anti-immigrant machine.

We have to wonder would any of these politicians stand up and speak out if there was a democrat in the White House rounded up, detaining and deporting? You bet your sweet whiskers they wouldn’t be.  Would the liberals be out in mass standing up and out, speaking against these policies? You and I know they would not. Even some radicals that we know will not even entertain these questions. Is it because this is the best we have? This is the best that we have to work with at this time? How many of the “us” were silent during the Obama administration’s bombing of over 7 countries and his deporting of millions? An excellent article, The Hard Truths About Obama’s Deportation Priorities, written by Elliott Young and published on Huff Post has this to say:

“The truth matters. In this moment of panic as Trump terrorizes immigrants, we should not abandon the truth to highlight the brutality of Trump’s immigration policies. Trump’s Executive Orders on immigration, his expansion of who is defined as a criminal and his rhetoric about “bad hombres” are a departure from Obama, but not as much as we might like to believe.

If progressives keep lying to themselves about their past, they are doomed to continue to push the same failed policies of the corporate wing of the Democratic party, exemplified by Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. On immigration, the answer to Trump is not returning to Obama’s policies, but rather moving in a new direction that drastically reduces deportations and ceases to criminalize low-level offenses.” Mr. Young also notes that:

“The recent ICE raids under Trump were significant and alarming, but hundreds of such arrests happened every week under Obama. The only difference was that such arrests had become so routinized in the past that the mainstream media barely noticed.

Pointing out the similarities between Trump and Obama’s deportation policies should not assuage our anger, but rather mobilize us to oppose the anti-immigrant machine that was strengthened by Obama and is now being ramped up by Trump. The fact that Secretary Kelly describes ICE raids at homes in the middle of the night as routine should be horrifying not because Kelly is lying, but because he is largely telling the truth. Mass detention and deportation became a routine part of daily life under Obama, and it only threatens to become worse under the new president. In other words, the recent ICE raids under Trump were significant and alarming, but hundreds of such arrests happened every week under Obama.

Why It Matters

Some immigrant advocates have argued that to dwell on the extreme nature of Obama’s deportation policies not only doesn’t matter now, but that it undermines the very real and present threat posed by Trump. However, while Trump’s immigration policies must be opposed and defeated, we also have to be mindful of the ways in which putatively progressive Democratic politicians continue to use the rhetoric of protecting hard-working immigrants while continuing policies that lead to mass deportations.” Check out more of the facts HERE.

So where were the democrat voices that so eloquently spoke from the stage on Saturday? Why did they not speak out when one of their own was doing the dirty task? Can we trust them now? Why should we? We must ask these politicians how are you policing your communities? When you arrest people for low level crimes and their prints are sent into the Fed then what? You know as well as we do what happens. Case in point what has happened here in Ct. Luis Barrios was stopped for a tail-light out. He is now facing deportation. Yes for a tail-light out. Yes we know you will say, it is trumps fault, the case has been dormant since 2011 and now under trump there is a call for Mr. Barrios’s deportation. Is there not an underground railroad that we can support? We must end all Broken Windows Policing. Stop helping ICE deport.

Those of us on the outside of the political scene will continue to speak up and out. We will continue to support our Trans sisters and brothers no matter who is sitting in the white house or no matter who is standing up on the stage or up against us. We will continue to tell the truth no matter if the liberals or so called radicals oppose us. We will laugh at them and say, how about, poor boys and girls. We will never be beholden to any politician no matter what party they belong to. We know that our liberation will not come from them but from us.
