Our View:

ACT for America is an extremist group who actively spreads Islamophobic hate nationwide. This organization plans to demonstrate in front of Waterbury City Hall to protest Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage. In doing so, they equate these two heinous acts with Islam and Muslims.

In CT, we seek to counter this narrative with solidarity, peace, and love for our Muslim friends and family, especially during this holy month of Ramadan.

Both FGM and Child Marriage are violations of basic human rights. These practices reflect inequality, discrimination, and violate a person’s right to health, security, physical integrity, freedom from torture, and life (World Health Organization 2017 Fact Sheet on FGM). While we acknowledge this internationally-recognized, indisputable fact, our reaction is entirely different from ACT for America’s.

Act for America has decided to vilify an entire religion in response to FGM and child marriage. Islam is not immune to being manipulated by the few, nor is any other religion; history can attest. Their reaction ranges between hopelessly misguided at best to blatantly violent at worst. For their initiatives and activities, Southern Poverty Law Center’s has labeled ACT for America as a hate group.

The image ACT for America paints of our Muslim communities as diametrically opposed to Western values coupled with calls to “protect” America and its Constitution reek of intimidation, fearmongering, and threat. Despite their official policy statement claiming that, “Freedom to practice one’s religion in peace is afforded to each of us,” they immediately follow with, “That said, through our activism, we will continue to do all we can to address the threat presented by those who seek to destroy our Western way of life,” effectively qualifying and negating their previous position emphasizing freedom of religion. Make no mistake, this isn’t about promoting human rights, defending women and children, or protecting American democratic values; it’s about Islamophobia, discrimination, and rhetoric to scare, incite hostility, and threaten.

Brigitte Gabriel is the founder and executive director of ACT for America. Her actions since 2007 have created the environment for Donald Trump’s unconstitutional Muslim ban to be publicly accepted. See the “In Her Own Words” section of SPLC’s website which provides news and video links to her quotes listed below; we have included some of the most disturbing here:

• “practicing Muslim who believes the word of the Koran to be the word of Allah … who goes to mosque and prays every Friday, who prays five times a day — this practicing Muslim, who believes in the teachings of the Koran, cannot be a loyal citizen of the United States.” 2007, DOD Joint Forces Staff College

• Europe is “paying the price” because it “ignored the cancer growing in its body when it was at Stage Two.” “Today, Europe and its cancer is at Stage Four.” 2015, Fox News

• As it related to Syrian refugees: “They are people trying to suck off of the people in the West. They know they can get a free ticket for money.” 2015, Breitbart News

Please join us in showing solidarity for our Muslim brothers and sisters! We hope to see you there.
