New York City curator, painter and sculptor, Antony Zito, returns to his home state to compile a group exhibition on the theme of “mythology”. Featuring 19 New England artists who are represented through a carefully selected array of paintings, sculpture, photography and installation art, The Mythology Show will fill Artspace Hartford’s gallery and its subterranean “Grotto” with contemporary interpretations of the legends and archetypes of humankind. The women and men in this exhibition were selected based on their alignment with the following quote about the function of myths and stories in our lives:

“Shakespeare said that art is a mirror held up to nature. And that’s what it is. The nature is your nature, and all of these wonderful poetic images of mythology are referring to something in you. When your mind is trapped by the image out there so that you never make the reference to yourself, you have misread the image. The inner world is the world of your requirements and your energies and your structure and your possibilities that meets the outer world. And the outer world is the field of your incarnation. That’s where you are. You’ve got to keep both going. As Novalis said, ‘The seat of the soul is there where the inner and outer worlds meet.’ ”

We visited Open Studio Hartford for a short time on Saturday November 10. We present two artists whose work we viewed and hope to view again perhaps in a one person exhibition around town.

Robert Zott
We first became acquainted with the artist Robert Zott many years ago, don’t remember how we did or when it was but visited him when he was first living in Art Space Hartford. There was a showing in one of the art spaces of his photographs of tombstones and I got a chance to go to his studio and meet him and see more work by this artist. His work is not only funny but it is amazing to see the surnames of people, common everyday words that one would not expect to be a persons last name or that is a common last name but in this arrangement becomes no longer common but a work of art.

The Death of Color

What a way to start this article. Color has died and is buried, but immortalized on a tombstone. What a strange concept. Color has died.

Most of us visiting a cemetery would probably just pass by a tombstone unless the stone was an extraordinary work of art. If noticed on our visit the names Carpenter, Mechanic, Barber, Postman (now that would be one that I would stop and wonder about) Baker and Doctor we more than likely would just pass by, go about our business, mourn our dead and leave a plant or bouquet of flowers. But here in this arrangement the names and the stones take on a whole new meaning. Arranged together by the artist this work removes the stones from their individual stand and together become something new. “There Goes The Neighborhood” conjures up to us that the workers are invading some posh little place, invading with their aches and pains, their callous and bruises, their greasy hands, smelling like baked bread and hopefully Mr. or Ms. Postman has washed their hands after delivering all that mail. In “There goes the Neighborhood,” they rest together, in all their working class glory, regardless of what the upper classes may say, want or desire.

Artists such as Robert Zott take which is available arrange it as only an artist can and present to us something we have never seen or most likely never thought of. By the hand of the artist our dearly departed become together with others, art. This working of Zott’s can not be an easy process, finding a cemetery, walking around finding a tombstone. He walks the cemetery searching for stones with just the last name. No first names, no birth date or death date, no epitaph. What a joy it must be to find a stone with a name, a name that can become more than just another name. A name and a stone that fits into the parameters that the artist has set for his work. Some of us are old enough to remember the Dick, Jane, Sally and Spot books that we learned to read from. You know the old, Run Dick Run, See Dick Run, See Sally laugh, Laugh Sally laugh or something like that. In the hands, mind and eye of the artist this series takes on a whole new meaning. A meaning that is closely associated with the death of Dick by drowning and the idea unless he is cremated he will end up under a stone. Just another name, another stone in another cemetery somewhere for an artist to find someday. Bon Voyage a French phrase  usually translated in English to “goodbye”, “have a nice trip,” “safe journey,” Yes, Bon Voyage Dick where ever you end up or down in the case of drowning or being buried in your grave.

Zott reminds us of the endless possibilities all around in our world for the making of art. But yes it takes an artist to draw out these possibilities, to show us what is indeed possible and in doing so presents us with a new way of seeing the world. It takes an artist as John’s said, to “take something, do something with it, do something else.” As a child I use to go to a cemetery in my hometown. There was a tombstone, a cube standing on one corner with the name Day. That’s all just Day. I remember how all of us kids admired that stone. I wondered this morning where Purple was buried in this hometown cemetery. (more…)


Crossing the street to see an art show can and may be dangerous. Going all over town, via shuttle, walking from venue to the next is not usually our idea of entertaining ourselves or guests who are visiting us for the weekend. But how can one who is now in this day and age mildly interested in art in this area not check out some of hundreds of artists, dozens of studios, galleries and other creative places if only to see what type of natural habitat these artists produce their art in. Been in all types of places in our long-life time stretching back to our coming of age in NYC in the mid- 1960s when all heaven began breaking loose in the world of art and artists questioned the very idea of art, what could be art, how could be art and what can we do in the name of art. Could the sloshing of water in our boot really be as grand as a symphony? Were we the conductor or the player? Could making a giant salad and having fun while getting our fill be filling? What about lines so high in the sky that no one could see them let along admire their beauty? Challenge, and change and challenge and change everything. Once back in the day when we were full of it, we wrote “Jump up create a space, go back down space erased.”

Keeping up with art all these years causes one to arrive in a place that has little room for fake. Has little room for reinventing the wheel, going around and around doing the same old thing and calling it by another name. Looking over the glossy program book we found the names of a few people in the area who make art that we may be interested in checking out and a few natural habitats that we wanted to see, if only to see what Hartford has to offer for artist space. Can we keep a straight face while viewing these places, side eyeing the studio all the while trying to go ahhh over the art works that hold very little interest for us? Do we on such a beautiful Sunday really want to join with the thousands of annual visitors and go about  looking at stuff, much of it ho-hum, the same old hum over and over or would we rather do something else? Maybe enjoy the Autumn colors? The colors are quite beautiful this year.

How far would be want to travel to see what we can see? Olga interest was piqued when she read about a artist way down at the Colt Gateway who did a “mixture of functional and non-functional ceramic ware.” “I just love non-functional ceramic ware,” said Olga, “just something to look at like a vase full of holes.” You know that it is a pretty good idea, just the vase, a vase that doesn’t hold water, just the vase as a work of art, full of holes. “Yeah,” said Bessy Marie, “I’ve seen so many non-functional pieces in my life I would rather go home and eat meatloaf.” Just look at the little pictures in the program book, over and over art, same old, same old, he is working in the impressionist school, she in pastels, beeswax, Hippie Hats, turned and carved wood. Wearable handmade jewelry, mixed media, Whimsical designs in metal, Abstract art 1, 2, 3, 4 everyone loves colorful abstract art and last but not least imaginative, surrealist, psychedelic and dreamlike paintings. Spin the great wheel of art history, pick a time any time do some art. “I graduated from art school and this is what I learned to do.” Smooth, clean, glossy and pretty. Since we are not in the market for anything for over the sofa, (we don’t even have one) don’t wear jewelry, and our home can’t hold another Knick knack or other object of art we passed up many a open door. Poking her head into a door way Olga added, “Here look at the very least we’ll see how talented Mary is because she can paint a cow.” Not that there is anything wrong with painting a cow as then I can have a painting of a cow in my apartment rather than chickens in the kitchen.  My goodness is my head swirling, tu m’ ennuies! is about all I can say.

I will scratch my head on that line. Perhaps one of the artist who is more enlightened on its meaning can tell us sometime. I for one refuse to take the world as it is even if I have to give up my work but never my intent of making justice for all and liberation from the powers that be a number one priority. Maybe I just don’t understand it, the saying that is.

So, what do you like? Crossing the street looking both ways, walking slow so not to slip on wet leaves, or stumble on the cracks and upheaved chucks of concrete, avoiding a mud bath for our shoes wondering what the big black van was, hoping it wasn’t that small city music group who blasts out their sounds and causes many to block their ears, and visiting a show that we knew would move us from one place to the next. No time to be bored. You can bet $10.00 on us that we were not bored, interested to say the least. Very interested in this open Open Studio greenhouse weekend gallery. Light and airy. A show called Terraria/Novel Objectives at Knox Inc just a short walk across the street, not much to lose if we find ourselves bored almost to death we can go home asking ourselves why and take a nap.  Very interested in this piece called Bowls. My first question on entering the show was who piled the dirt? Well according to Marc Burns it was two gentlemen name Etani and Juan Perez who ran the skip loader. A helping hand to pile gives the artist a break so she won’t have to stand there and shovel, shovel full, after shovel full of dirt to make a mound. Not that there still in some situations isn’t a  need for shoveling if only to build up your muscles, if fuel is scarce or there isn’t a skip loader available to artist or farmer, ditch digger, or someone like we said in the olden day, was trying to dig their way to China on the other side of the world. (Tried that once but gave up after 8 mins.) The question of who drove the skip loader and if they were included as artists in the Bowls piece or not was lively causing me to write these little lines, “Who drove the Skip Loader and piled the dirt, Without him who did, the piece wouldn’t work.” We suppose here we could debate this idea for the longest time and are well aware of how it has been debated over and over through-out art history, just who gets the credit that require workers to help do the work? Shouldn’t they get a hurrah also? My god by now we should have pushed the artist off the pedestal and push the dam pedestal over? A short tit for tat came about concerning if the two who drove the skip loader and piled the dirt should or should not be given full billing with the artists who created the work?

But “Who Drove The Car?”

“Way back in 1953 Robert Rauschenberg directed John Cage to drive his car in a straight line over twenty sheets of paper that Rauschenberg had glued together and laid out on the road near his studio. The front tires left a faint impression while the rear tires that had passed- through a pool of paint that Rauschenberg had poured in the street deposited a black tread mark that stretches along the length of the paper. Automobile Tire Print challenges the traditional understanding of art and authorship and presented a whole new definition of what it meant to be an artist. Was Cage here just a printer like one operating a printing press or was he also an artist in full partnership with Rauschenberg, without him there would have been no piece. Many other examples in art history could be sited here but why bother? We are not in the business of trying to convince folks to like or conform to our way of thinking. Who cares if the revolution is far from over and our side seems to not be wining.

The Show.

Artists in Terraria/Novel Objectives included Marc Burns, Rebecca Wasilwski, Matt Dondero, Angel Pena, Audrey Ryan, Adam Viens, Jason Werner some a no show according to one of the artists who was rearranging some heavy rocks bending over and causing a woman viewing the action to ask if he was a plumber. No telling who is going to show up at an art show.

“You know.” said Olga, “not to sound corny here or like some greeting card, but indeed sometimes life does get in the way.” When one has to work for their own daily bread there is no time for play unless of course one has a job that includes playing. Once away back in the day I had a job that all I had to do was every once in awhile lift my head up and say “Goodnight.” and that was only for three people. Once they got out of my way I could do anything I wanted. Just lock the door and play, play, play. So for eight hours, sometimes eight long hours I played. Never invited anyone in to play with me as that was against the rules and there were cameras everywhere. Sure as shit Old CG would look at the camera’s every morning. Probably got off watching me play.

Well Bessy had a vacation all planned and Olga had no time off since this was a new job, no playing allowed, in this job, they watch us like hawks watching for their dinner, nosey that’s their name Mr. and Miss Nosey watching the cameras, make one false move, if they like you they will call you on the phone, if not announce for all to hear on the radio what you are doing that is against the rules. You know that power thing. Even all though not one of them have any right to power they have it by hook or by crook and now they wield it like tyrants. Petty tyrants as a matter of fact. Little pinching bugs of the first order.

Go Bessy Marie Go!

Pick a spot, Bessy Marie, any spot and Bessy Marie chose Brattleboro Vermont. Not far away, just a bit over 3 hours, the lay over in Springfield is what gets to one, making all passengers in the Business Class irritable “a fucking 45 mins”, old Joe said, “is just too long to be hanging around in Springfield waiting for another train to come along the track that we need.” Yes folks getting to Vermont is on one track and nothing had better be coming down the track going the other way. “Good thing I don’t have a connection to make,” white hair with heavy perfume yelled out in the air. Nobody is listening, and everyone cares, as no one not Bessy Marie or anyone else riding the train, would want to be derailed and end up in gully, now that would be a delay.

 

Bessy Marie had reserved a room at the Latchis Hotel in downtown, a Art Deco place built in 1938 by the Latchis family as a testament to the life and work of Demetrius P. Latchis, the building was billed as “a town within a town — all under one roof” because of the multiple shops contained within. Situated in Brattleboro, this hotel is within a 15-minute walk of Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and Brattleboro Common right on Main Street for anyone who doesn’t have a car its a dream come true. Here is my review of the Latchis Hotel in downtown Brattleboro.

The Latchis Hotel

First I must thank Olga for “finding” this hotel. I would be hard pressed to come up with much to complain about here. If anything ever was worthy of being called the cat’s pajama’s it is this Art Deco Style Hotel. I spent three nights as if a small bug in an elegant clutch purse. The lobby floors and furnishings, the glittery check-in desk area giving the absolute feeling of time travel to the late 1930’s were wonderful. The staff were all helpful and courteous. The bed room was very nice with two large windows to look out to Main and Flat Street. The intergrity of the 1930’s is maintained by the choices for furniture and a mirror framed in simple wood. Very clean but old fixtures in the bathroom and very good hot water in the shower. The bed was not at all lumpy, old or smelly as some have complained in reviews nor was there any loud noise outside in the street after dark. How happy I was to find 3 full boxes of tissue, one on each night stand and one in the bathroom. (most of the modern hotels have those thin boxes inserted in the bathroom wall that always run out in no time. Tissue in each room may sound like a minor point but it is really quite appreciated as usually in other hotels I have found that the tissue runs out after a short time. The hotel does allow dogs to stay over night. The room is specially cleaned after each stay. The policy allows one pet, 220lbs and the fee is $40.00 per night. For myself and some other folks who suffer from animal allergies we can only hope that the hotel does specially clean the rooms after each pet stay. Barking is not permitted I hope and that the pet must leave the hotel when its family goes out.

I must say that I have never stayed in a hotel where the front desk closes down at 10:00pm. No check in after that hour. All hotel guests are give keys, yes real keys to the front doors so if they arrive back at the hotel after ten they can let themselves in. There is an emergency number to call if anything happens after 10:00pm.

A real special part of this is the hotel is connected to the Latchis Theater an absolute jewel of a place and the crowing jewel of the Latchis experience. The Zodiac signs on the ceiling, the murals of Greek goddesses and gods, the elegant entry areas all added to the time travel experience. Yes indeed I am a bug in an Art Deco clutch purse; wearing the cat’s pajama’s so giddy that I’ve mixed up the metaphors. Bessy gives the Latchis Theater and Hotel FIVE BIG STARS and hope that this wonderful place goes on for another eighty years.

In March 2003, the Brattleboro Arts Initiative, in partnership with the Preservation Trust of Vermont, purchased the Latchis Memorial Building which included the four screen Latchis Theater, the 60-room hotel, a ballroom and various other businesses.

Next door is the Latchis Theater a treat all in itself. Went to see a Star is Born staring Lady Gaga. Well the theater is stunning.

OUT for a Walk

Walking is best when one is visiting a new town. Well its good anytime, not only for health reasons but for all the things one can see in a few city blocks, or out in the woods. A small sampler of what I saw while walking around the town. (more…)

The La MaMa Puppet Festival showcases new contemporary puppet theatre by artists from around the world. Curated by Denise Greber, this year’s series focuses on diversifying the voices, stories, and perspectives shared onstage, with the goal of uplifting marginalized identities within the puppet community. The festival highlights interdisciplinary works from female artists who explore issues such as cultural identity, Black Lives Matter, the refugee crisis, and the disability experience. Programming also includes family events, the annual Puppet Slam, La MaMa Coffeehouse Chronicles, and Jump Start: a weekend of works in progress.

Puppet theatre has been an integral part of La MaMa’s programming since 1962, when Ellen Stewart invited puppet artists from Korean to perform their production of Head Hunting by Pagoon Kang Wouk. Through the Puppet Festival, La MaMa continues to support both emerging and established artists whose innovative work enriches the field of puppetry. The festival is under the leadership of Denise Greber (Director and Curator) and Federico Restrepo (Producing Director).

The 8th La MaMa Puppet Festival Fall 2018 has been made possible with support from Ford Foundation, Howard Gilman Foundation, The Jim Henson Foundation, Puppet Slam Network, The Andrew W.
